Technology In Biology and Medicine

Series Editor: Prof. Paolo di Nardo, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy

In the past innovation may have been the prerogative of large, closed research labs, but their advantage over smaller rivals and the developing world is now being eroded by two powerful forces. The first is globalization, as more emerging countries become both consumers and, increasingly, suppliers of innovative products and services. The second is the rapid advance of information technologies, which are spreading far beyond the internet and into older industries such as steel, aerospace and car manufacturing. This development is being felt also in the bio-medical domain. The convergence between bio-medicine and engineering holds promises to be highly beneficial for both patients and industries. Words like information technology, advanced materials, imaging, nanotechnology and sophisticated modeling and simulation are now usual in biomedical research and clinical centers. Some scientists and analysts believe that the transformation of biology into an information science instead of a discovery science could be one of the most important innovations in the history of this science, if we are able to activate the untapped ingenuity of people and to accept the risk and the possible failure as central factor of innovation.

The info-medical revolution will be led by information technologies through the establishment of an intelligent network that will enable many other big technological changes. The progressive increase of degenerative diseases and related disabilities together with the extraordinary expansion of longevity will determine the impossibility to sustain health system overspending in most countries. Info-medicine can enhance the quality and quantity of health care, creating equal access to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures by all individuals independently of geographic and economic conditions. The adoption of these technologies, however, depends on absolute proof that they will produce better outcomes and offer value for money.

It is TBM's ambition to represent an international forum to discuss in-depth the most advanced concepts and solutions merging biology, medicine and engineering. To this end, the journal will give scientists the opportunity to publish their most important results reaching the widest audience, while the book series will thoroughly dissect the new concepts in order to supply students and professionals with the most advanced tools to apply them, all in the shortest possible timeframe.
