Latest News
An IEEE Spectrum article highlights a first-of-its-kind high-voltage circuit breaker developed at Georgia Tech that uses supercritical CO₂ instead of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)—a greenhouse gas with a warming potential nearly 25,000 times greater than CO₂. The new design, now entering testing, could significantly cut emissions from the hundreds of thousands of SF6-insulated breakers used across global power grids. In 2018 alone, SF6 leaks accounted for about 1% of the world’s total warming potential.
The article in IEEE Electrification Magazine delves into the roots of electrical engineering, tracing its rise from 19th-century scientific breakthroughs to a formal discipline by the early 20th century. Marcelo Godoy Simões highlights how companies like Westinghouse and GE trained engineers in-house before university programs emerged around 1915. He draws parallels between early engineers and fictional detectives, emphasizing figures like Charles Steinmetz and Edith Clarke. Simões argues that they embodied true engineering—blending theory and practical problem-solving.
The latest issue of IEEE Power & Energy Magazine explores the growing importance of power electronics in enhancing grid reliability, with a particular focus on technologies like FACTS and HVdc systems. These technologies are expected to play a critical role in meeting future energy demands, especially as renewable energy sources and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) like wind and solar become more prevalent. According to the International Energy Agency’s recent report, to achieve energy and climate goals, the world’s electricity use needs to grow 20% faster in the next decade than it did in the previous one. HVdc systems, already advanced in regions like China, are facilitating long-distance power transmission and improving the integration of renewable energy. FACTS devices enhance grid performance and power transfer capability, offering a more efficient alternative to building new transmission lines.
The climate crisis poses a significant economic threat as well as an environmental one. In a keynote speech at the “Europe 2025” Conference, UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell warned that unchecked climate impacts could reduce Europe’s GDP by up to 2.3% by mid-century, with long-term consequences for growth, employment, and stability. He argued that strong climate action offers a path forward. With global clean energy investment exceeding $2 trillion in 2024, Europe has an opportunity to lead. A new, ambitious EU climate plan (NDC), Stiell said, could act as a powerful economic signal—attracting capital, creating jobs, and strengthening resilience. Germany’s €500 billion Climate Transformation Fund, including €100 billion dedicated to climate action, was cited as a model for linking climate action with economic strategy.
